European CSOs are currently facing an unprecedented attack from certain Members of the European Parliament. This attack, driven by some MEPs from the European People’s Party (EPP) and far-right groups, is fuelled by disinformation. It relies on misleading arguments to artificially create a scandal, further amplified by poorly informed media articles. At a time when democratic values are being eroded across the EU and its Member States, and when civic actors advocating for these values are increasingly under attack, this renewed assault on funding for CSOs and on our legitimacy within the democratic process threatens not only to further shrink European civic spaces but also to undermine democracy as a whole.
For this reason, EU-LAT Network joins over 570 civil society organisations from across the EU in urging MEPs to address these unprecedented attacks on NGOs and ensure that civil society receives adequate funding and is able to provide essential perspectives.
