The EU-LAT Network joins 40+ organisations in urging the EU to adopt a bold, forward-looking budget and reframe its approach to international partnerships to be grounded in a rights-based framework that promotes human dignity, human security and equity.
We highlight that addressing both current and future crises, along with setbacks in human rights, sustainable development and gender equality, requires the EU to mobilise additional financial resources.
A bold, forward-looking budget will allow Europe and its partners to be better prepared and more resilient to shocks. To achieve this, the statement highlights the need for scaling Official Development Assistance (ODA) to at least €200 billion in the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). This investment would enable the EU to tackle urgent global challenges, including climate change, poverty, inequality and conflict, while reinforcing its position as a credible and trusted global leader.
The statement also underscores that prioritising people-centred and sustainable policies benefits not only partner countries, but also enhances Europe’s resilience to crises, fosters global security and protects economic stability.
Global challenges require global cooperation, sustained action in fragile and conflict affected settings as well as substantial resources. By aligning its budget with its values and commitments, the EU can take decisive steps to address such challenges and build a more sustainable, equitable and resilient future for all.
