Recommendations to the EU and its Member States for protection of human rights related to the activities of companies in Latin America

Over the last few years, the CIFCA and Grupo Sur networks, now merged into the EU-LAT Network, have worked through different actions on the growing impact of European companies in Latin America and in some cases on their direct or indirect responsibility for human rights abuses.

In this document, we present a series of recommendations addressed to the European Union and its Member States for the promotion and protection of human rights in the framework of EU-LAC relations, including the implementation of trade agreements.

From the EU-LAT Network we recognize the positive advances in this area, such as the adoption of National Plans for the implementation of the Principles on Business and Human Rights, and we urge the EU to continue working to guarantee and protect human rights in the context of companies in Latin America.

The binding UN Treaty on Business and Human Rights, currently under negotiation, would be a fundamental international law instrument to advance in this direction.
