The European Parliament echoes the numerous complaints issued by national and international civil society organizations, in a resolution adopted on March 14, 2019 (ENG), in which it regrets that the Guatemalan Government continues to violate the rule of law.

In its resolution, the Parliament denounces the increase in attacks against human rights defenders, expresses concerns about the proposed law in Congress on non-governmental organizations for development; and recalls the importance of creating and maintaining a safe and favorable environment for NGOs.

In its resolution, the European Parliament supports the work of CICIG “vital in Guatemala and its work in the fight against impunity and corruption” and asks the European Commission for all the support, political and financial cooperation to fulfill its mandate.

The European Parliament is convinced that the proposed reform of the National Reconciliation Act poses a considerable threat to the rule of law in Guatemala and would seriously undermine the important progress achieved through the work of national courts in their fight against impunity and urges the Guatemalan Congress to not approve the bill.
