MEPs from six parliamentary groups ask the Commission about the situation of Human Rights in Peru

The parliamentary question, which shows concern about the growing inequality and criminalization of defenders in Peru, has been signed by Zeller (EPP); McAvan (S & D); Bilbao (ALDE); Benito, González, Urbán, Torres (GUE); Urtasun (Greens / ALE) and Corrao (EFDD)

In a week in which we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, MEPs * from six European political groups (EPP, S & D, ALDE, GUE, Greens / ALE and EFDD) have today presented a parliamentary question to the European Commission and the External Action Service to denounce inequality in Peru and the violation of human rights, especially of indigenous peoples. During the last week of human rights in Brussels, they received the visit of the defenders Rocío Silva and María Luzmila Bermeo, who shared their concerns about the poverty situation of peasant and indigenous communities and the eco-territorial conflicts.

In the content of the question, parliamentarians give visibility to the situation of peasant and indigenous women in Peru, who are the main agents of food sovereignty in the country and who suffer most from inequality in access to education, health and political representation. In addition, national organizations for the defense of human rights, such as FEDEPAZ, IBC, Centro Flora Tristán and CNDDHH, among others, have denounced the growing criminalization of human rights defenders in Peru.

Facing this situation of concern, parliamentarians have asked about the new financing mechanisms that the EU foresees to combat inequality in Peru and asks them for information on how the recommendations on indigenous peoples are implemented, especially to combat the multiple discrimination of women.
