European parliamentarians respectfully address the president of the government of Guatemala Jimmy Morales, concerned about the situation of the rule of law, democracy and human rights in the country.

The MEPs have expressed in particular their concern about: the measures taken to prevent the work of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG); negative public accusations against magistrates of the Constitutional Court (CC), the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Human Rights Ombudsman; as well as the measures of the executive itself that ignore the decisions of the same CC. We consider that such events undermine the separation of powers and call into question the progress made in the fight against impunity and corruption in the country.
