Members of the European Parliament sent a letter to the mexican Senate about the elimination of two key trust funds (fideicomisos) devoted to the protection of human rights defenders and victims in Mexico.

They called on the Mexican Legislative branch to reconsider the proposal to eliminate these funds, to strengthen and improve the institutions that protect human rights and to take all the necessary measures to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 without putting further people at risk of violence and human rights violations.

The initiative brought by President López Obrador is justified under the need to accumulate resources to deal with the economic crisis caused by the Covid pandemic. However, the elimination of these two funds rise concerns on how the State will grant the protection of HRDs, because the elimination could generate deadly delays in the assistance to beneficiaries who acutely need them.
