Recommendations to the European diplomatic community in Guatemala

From FONGI, CODEG and EU-LAT networks, we express our deep concern about the deterioration of democracy and the systematic violation of rights that are being experienced in Guatemala, as well as the constant attacks against human rights defenders. We condemn the constant attacks against human rights defenders, trade unionists, and justice operators.

We are concerned about the violent actions committed by the security forces against the right to freedom of expression and peaceful demonstration of the population.

The European Union and its Member States have an important role to play, ensuring and promoting coherence between internal policies and the impacts of their foreign policy in Guatemala.

We highlight a number of recommendations that could be formulated to the Guatemalan authorities in the framework of the diplomatic and political relations.
