Berta Cáceres Flores, an environmental and human rights defender from the Lenca community, in Honduras, was assassinated on the 2nd of March 2016. Prior to her assassination she had been a victim of stigmatisation and criminalisation. She claimed the right to free, prior and informed consent as stated in the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention 169, a fundamental right of Indigenous Peoples when facing the presence of extractivist industry projects in their territory. Her assassination is an emblematic case that remains in impunity. Between 2010 and 2016, 123 land rights defenders have been assassinated in Honduras, where the rate of impunity reaches 96%. Bertha Zúñiga Cáceres, Berta’s daughter, has received the support of members of the European Parliament (Brussels, May 2017).
